New York



Spatial Understanding



The Northern border of New York is at 45°N and the Southern border is at 41°N.The Eastern border is around 73.5°W and the Western border is between 79°W and 80°W. In relation to other states you will see that it is just north of Pennsylvania and directly west of the state of Massachusetts.

Places and Regions



In the state of New York you will find a lot of very popular landmarks that help to define the it. Some of these include the Empire State building (above), Central Park, The Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and multiple museums. New York has a lot of mountains, most of which are a part of the Appalachian Mountain system, however, Adirondack (left) and Catskill mountains cover the eastern part of the state.

New York has around 150 different species of trees and around 600 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.New York also has over 260 bird species such as the crow, hawk, and several types of woodpecker. The state bird is the bluebird and the state tree is the sugar maple.

The average July Temperature of New York is 69℉ in January the average is 21℉. Average annual precipitation there is about 39 inches. New York is typically a warm and sunny place from May to October, but has cold winters. Snow is common in the mountains and interior part of the state.

Environment and Society


Agriculture is important to New York State. In 2010 agricultural production returned close to $4.7 billion to the farm economy. 23% of the state’s land area is used to produce many food products.

Sea levels are rising, which worsen the risks of flooding. New York is getting increasingly hotter. It's raining more often, but the level of snow is decreasing and spring is arriving earlier. To help minimize risks from climate change, New York State must do something. One of the ways to reduce emission reduction is to build weatherization and renewable energy generation. This will add jobs to New York, so more people in New York can work. This is one way the environment affected the people.

Geography In Use


  Ellis Island is one of the geographical features of New York that helped populate the state and make it so that it was so diverse. In was the main place for immigrants to come to America.

Only a year ago was when Hurricane Irene caused sea levels to increase and flood all underground subway stations. It's becoming an increasingly large problem in New York. This was due to the increase of sea level by New York.
